My New Favorite Things

My New Favorite Things

Alrighty…well, I am officially unemployed.  Today was my first day and I am already ready to go insane.  But I figured I’d start my "new life" with a new blog post.  I’ve decided to share a few of my favorite new things.
1) ZUMBA – I am so gaga over this new workout.  It’s an insane workout but it’s so much fun.  I can’t believe how much fun it is and how many body parts get moved.  I think this is something I may become addicted to.  I’m actually addicted already but I can see it becoming more than a phase.
2) Solas – www.solasnaturals.com  This is a wonderful local company and their products are mostly organic and (some) vegan.  The lip balms are wonderful…so moisturizing, lightweight and yummy smelling (and tasting, if you happen to lick your lips like I’ve been doing).  The company makes many products, including soy candles, soaps, scrubs and other body products.  And everything is "Made with thought in the Annapolis Valley, NS" – very cool.  (Also see Burnt Out Solutions.)
3) Rusk Sensories Purify Tea Tree Oil Shampoo – I bought this at my mom’s salon and it’s so nice.  It smells minty and it feels so good in your hair.  It’s a nice clean.
4) Arthur’s Juices & Smoothies – http://arthursjuice.com They make great non-dairy smoothies and use all natural ingredients, sourced from (wherever in) Canada.  
The website is great for finding out pretty much anything you want to know about these yummy treats: ingredients, % of daily intake of nutrients, vitamins, fibre, etc. and what the benefits are (ie. reducing types of cancer).  They are so yummy and nutricious.  My favorite is the Carrot Energizer.  Mmm!!  I love a healthy indulgence.
5) Silhouette Satisfaction Yogurt – All I can say is YUMMY! 
6) Remember Me (Starring Robert Pattinson) – what a great movie.  The boy has talent far beyond his Twilight career.  The ending of this movie is going to leave you feeling so many emotions – guarantee to piss you off and make you cry.
7) Cooking with any and every kind of spice – I don’t use salt (at least if I can help it) but I love cooking and I love flavor.  I have been trying all different kinds of spices lately.  Mix ’em up and trying new things.  Last night Blair and I had chicken breasts tossed in Epicure’s 3 Onion Dip mix with garlic, rosemary and thyme (and some panko) added in.  Very crispy and yummalicious.
8) Tim Horton’s raisin tea biscuits – Okay, they’re not really good for you (I’m sure they’re healthier than my favorite honey crueller (OMG YUM!)) but they are so good.  Especially heated (or not) with some soy butter.  Mmm…I could go for one right now.
9) Second Hand Shopping – Maybe it’s not my "new" favorite thing but it certainly never gets old.  I LOVE Frenchy shopping.  (Amy I am looking forward to you {and your duel baby bump *she’s having twins, y’all*} and I getting out there and being completely inappropriate.)  If you’re willing to dig a little bit you can find the best buys.  The other day I picked up a brand new pair of jeans (tags were still on ’em), a Calvin Klein dress and a blouse for less than $7 for the lot.  Whoot whoot!!
10) An Unfinished Life by Mark Spragg – This was a surprisingly good movie (Robert Redford, Jennifer Lopez, Morgan Freeman and Josh Lucas *drool*) that I saw a few years ago.  It sorta stuck with me and I recently picked up the book.  So far, so good.
11) Tabatha’s Salon Takeover – 6pm Saturday evenings on Slice -I LOVE THIS SHOW!  The woman is mad!  I love her.  She goes into a hurting salon (usually deep in debt) and takes over for a week.  She whips the staff into shape, helps with clientele and renovates.  She’s a bitch but she’s good at what she does.  I eagerly await this show to start again as soon as an episode ends.
I’m sure there will be more to add to this list.  In the meantime, let me know your favorites.

The Countdown is ON!!

Only a few more days until my employment "expires" for the next several months.  Whoop-de-doo!  I can’t wait! Party No, seriously…I am so excited.  Okay, not so enthusiastic about the EI thingy but something will come up.  There are bigger and MUCH better opportunities out there waiting for me to jump at them.  In fact, I’ve had several proposals already…so I’m not worried.  My only hope is that the opps roll in sooner rather than later.

PizzaI’ve decided to add a section for recipes here. I’m always trying out new YUMMY ideas….and lucky Blair gets to try them too (usually).    Open-mouthed
1/4 each Red Pepper and Green Pepper – sliced Julienne
1/4 cup carrots – matchstick style
3/4 cup finely chopped broccoli
1/4 cup Red onion – sliced Julienne
1/4 cup grated parsnip
1/4 cup chopped cabbage
1/2 cup snow peas
2 large cloves garlic
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/4 cup Asian Sesame dressing
1/4 cup chopped mushrooms
Olive oil (for cooking)
Garlic powder (NOT salt) (optional)
Asian spices (optional)
Meat of choice (optional)*
Peanuts, sesame seeds or almonds (optional)
*If you’re cooking with meat – in a skillet brown in olive oil and garlic and set aside to add later
– Heat olive oil in large skillet or wok.  Mix in ALL the vegetables and garlic.  Cook 6 minutes on medium heat, tossing often.
– Add garlic powder and toss.
– Add in the soy sauce and dressing (and spices if using).  Toss often.  Add in the nuts or seeds, continuing to toss.
*If using meat, add into vegetable medley and toss.  Continue to cook for 2 minutes,
Serve on own or over rice or Chinese noodles.

The Nap

I recently read a guest blog about the nap and it got me thinking…You know, the nap is quite underrated.  It’s one of those things that I rarely take advantage of, yet, when I do I feel so great.  Rejuvenated.  Excited.  Energized.  So I wonder…why don’t I take more naps?  The answer to that question is simply: It’s a matter of time and convenience.  I don’t afford myself the opportunity for this luxury.  (Perhaps, however, now that I will be *ahem* not so busy during the day I can take advantage of it.  Time will tell.)
Years ago when I worked at the coffee shop and my shift was the 5:30am start I would occasionally indulge in a little afternoon sleep.  I had to power up for the rest of my day.  I’ve found that the best way to nap is to lay your head at the FOOT of your bed (it’s a Feng Shui thing) and with your bed aimed toward your door (so when you’re napping your head will be in the direction of the door).  It sounds silly but I challenge you to try it.
Find some comfy gear – lounge pants, a sweater, a nice beat up pillow – and climb onto your mid-day throne (no, not that one).  Darken your room by closing your curtains and turn off your tv, radio and computer (and put down any books or magazines that you may want to read) and just relax.  Allow your mind to wander…not too much…to some place quiet and pretty, devoid of the hustle and bustle of everyday life and noise and chaos.  Allow yourself 15 minutes AT LEAST to get to your sleeping sanctuary and the nap will come.  I promise.  The minimum time for a nap should be 20 minutes….but even a 5 or 10 minute snooze can give you that second wind we sometimes so desperately need.
Blair said to me one day "You sure like your sleep, don’t you?"   HELLS YEAH!  I love sleep.  LOVE IT!!  In fact, I didn’t get enough of it last night and I feel like crapola this morning.  Well, actually, we’re into early afternoon now but I still feel crappy.  Sleep is good.  Sleep is HEALTHY.  Imagine how yucky you feel when you don’t get any.  And I think Blair is just jealous that he doesn’t get much of it (I am going to treat him to a nap sometime soon).  BTW the best way to get awesome, uninterrupted sleep is to turn off anything that jumbles your mind (said TV, computer, radio, etc.) an hour before hitting the sack and relax.  I like to read before bed – although sometimes a good book is worse than watching tv (hello Twilight series) because your mind will race and you get very thoughtful – and usually after 30-60 minutes I am ready to turn out the lights and start snoozing and drooling (isn’t that the best when you wake up and the side of your face and your pillow are soaked b/c you’ve drooled all over the place – THAT is a sign of a good sleep!!) and a lot of the time I don’t wake until the alarm goes off….unless of course there’s a 25 lb white beast on me thinking it’s playtime and working his way to scratching my eyes out – damn you, Winston. Red heart  Other than those few occasions I always wake feeling refreshed.

And Here We Go Again…

So…by this time I’m sure most people are aware that I.Hate.My.Job.  Seriously.  I’m not happy.  I haven’t been happy.  And I have actively been looking for new employment for some time now.  Well, Monday afternoon I learned that I am being laid off, effective March 26 thru September 7.  Shit!  Of course I am disgusted because no one wants the table turned on her but I am certainly looking at it from the most positive perspective.  I don’t have much choice. 
Yes it sucks that I am out (fortunately (yet, unfortuantely) it is not just me) but what can I do?  There’s no point in sulking and crying and freaking out (although my stress level has gone up somewhat – lawyers pay shit wages and EI covers only 55-60% so 55-60% of shit is MORE SHIT!) because the decision has been made.  All I can do (and have been doing) is keep looking and KNOW that God has something bigger in sight for me.  I know it’s out there and I have faith that it will come along.  Sure it may take some time but it’s out there.  And when I’m 100% ready I know God will be pushing me with full force to get my ass in gear and get out there and grab it (although, with the knowledge of unemployment right in my line of vision I feel I am pretty much 100% ready and not willing to be penniless, so God, if you happen to be reading my blog, here is my ass – please feel free to give it a kick now…Hard if you must).
Anyway, I will try and keep things posted on my successes, as I refuse to have any unsuccessfulness.
