House of Wax (2005)

I originally saw House of Wax back in 2005 when it was released.  I remember it being creepy then but, for some reason, I forgot all about it.

Until last weekend.  I was up really on Saturday morning and it was on TV.  I couldn’t watch it then, not starting in the middle, so I decided to watch it Sunday evening – before The Walking Dead season premier.  Which, on a side note*, was a very.bad.idea.

*{I mean, did you see The Walking Dead?  I think that is the most brutal television I have ever witnessed…..And I watched Dylan’s wife basically mistakenly get assassinated on 90210, breaking my teenaged heart!!  Someone referred to the Sunday night’s The Walking Dead episode as “beautiful brutality”, and I guess maybe it was.  Because, those of us who have watched the show from the beginning have become so emotionally involved in it, we haven’t been subjected to that kind of violence and loss-of-humanity on TV before, have we?  I certainly hadn’t.}

I was so literally traumatized from TWD, and from this darn movie, that I couldn’t sleep.  I couldn’t even close my eyes.  I eventually got up out of bed and roamed around for a bit, but not before turning my side lamp on at least four times.  Just to clear my head.

Anyway, House of Wax is a pretty good movie.  It’s not quite Screambut really, nothing is.

It’s got some pretty folks in it.  It’s got Paris Hilton getting slaughtered a bit, which, back in 2005, when Paris Hilton was (fuckingunfortunately) a household “thing”, was pretty awesome.

Spoiler Alert:  You’re Welcome!

It’s got spooks and some grossness and some thrills.

And then it’s got this guy popping up.

No freakin’ wonder I couldn’t sleep!!

The movie apparently doesn’t have much, if anything to do with the original House of Wax, starring Vincent Price.  Although, that creepy-ass white face up there is named “Vincent” in the movie….and I literally just got that.  Duh!

But it was a freaky little movie that I would have enjoyed a lot more if I were surrounded by a horde of people….and puppies….in the daytime.

Girl Crush

I think it’s safe to say that every little girl has other girls she “crushes” on.  Girls and women they admire and strive to be like.  I’ve always had girls crushes.  I still have girl crushes.  I think the celebrated ladies in my life have been pretty good role models for me while growing up.  Although I was raised very well by wonderful parents, I also think the morals these gals and their characters maintained have helped me develop into the person I am.  I’m not giving them 100% credit because that would be ridiculous, but I I think it’s important for young girls to have good role models (the Abster likes Selena Gomez and Debby Ryan) to look up to – girls with manners and etiquette and cute and quirky; yet make mistakes and learn life lessons.  Below is my list of girl crushes thru my life:

Of course, my NUMBER 1 Girl Crush is and always will be reserved for my girl Drew Barrymore.  I’ve loved her since E.T.

Drew in the 90's

Drew in the 90’s

Growing up in the 80’s (and being limited to tv AND two channels) I fell in love with Alyssa Milano from the first second I watched “Who’s the Boss?” .  She was so cool…beginning as a tomboy and growing into a mature young woman with cute clothes and the best hair.  I grew up with Alyssa.  Some of the time I wanted to be her.  I loved her and I am still a fan.

On " Who's The Boss?"

On ” Who’s The Boss?”

Candace Cameron was my age when she played DJ Tanner on Full House.  She was also Kirk Cameron’s sister and that made her even cooler.

Ah...DJ Tanner...what a girl.

Ah…DJ Tanner…what a girl.

Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty aka “90210”‘s Kelly and Brenda.  I think by now everyone knows of my adoration for the original 90210 and these two ladies (and Brandon and Dylan and Steve and….Nat!).  “90210” put 90’s role-modelling on the map!

Kelly & Brenda....my unrequited BFFs.

Kelly & Brenda….my unrequited BFFs.

My foray into my obsession with supermodels (and eventual spiral into eating disorders /weight obsession {https://welcometosandyland.wordpress.com/2012/01/16/my-secret-obsession/} began with Cindy Crawford.  My aunt Donna introduced me to Cindy’s career when I was 13 or 14 and I’ve followed it ever since.  In spite of her film “Fair Game”…Lame Cindy….LAME.

The world's best supermodel

Kristy Swanson was the original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and she was cooler than shit!  My BFF Stephanie and I loved her.  But, now that I think of it, I think we loved the idea of Buffy and her kick-ass vampire-slaying more than Kristy herself.  I feel a little bad for Ms. Swanson because she’s a pretty good actress and she’s gorgeous and I think her career could have been a lot bigger.  She deserves more that those shitty made-for-tv movies and Skating with the Stars or whatever the hell it was called.

The original Buffy!

Alicia Silverstone was introduced to the world early 90’s via Aerosmith videos and “The Crush” but we really didn’t fall in love with her until “Clueless” in 1995.  Since then she’s stayed sugary sweet, had a bunch of cutsie movies (and a great show – Hello, “Miss Match”) and is the biggest vegan activist (and author) I know of.  Alicia is saving the (animal) world.

Miss Match should have been kept on the air. Great show!

Oh…”My So-Called Life.”  Remember Angela Chase?  Remember Jordan Catalano?  Don’t we all have our own personal version of Jordan Catalano?

Claire Danes gave a wonderful portrayal as the angst-ridden coming-of-age Angela.  And then as Juliet to Leonardo’s Romeo (which solidified my love for Claire even more.)  She has come a long way but still seems very grounded.  Gnarly.

I first saw a modelling photo of Milla Jovovich when she was 13…which means I would’ve been 12.  I thought she was absolutely striking.  What a beautiful girl.  Then I saw her in “Kuffs” (Christian Slater!) in ’92 and “Dazed & Confused” (Cole Hauser!!!) in ’93 but my serious girl-crushing on her didn’t start until the “Resident Evil’ movies.  This girl is kick-ass!

Milla Jovovich

Lindsay Price.  She played An Li on All My Children and was semi-annoying.  But once she got to Beverly Hills (“90210”) I started to girl crush on her.  But the serious girl crushing came when she moved to “Eastwick” and played journalist Joanna Frankel (https://welcometosandyland.wordpress.com/2012/12/07/reviving-eastwick/).

Zooey Deschanel is quirk-a-licious.  She’s funny and she’s beautiful and she can sing and she’s so damn funny and she has the best style.  I love this girl.  Loved her in “Almost Famous.”  Loved her even more in “Elf.”  Totally girl-crushing on her in “The New Girl” (one of my new favorite shows – after “Grimm” of course).  Oh, and she has the cutest blog (http://hellogiggles.com/) with live bunny cams.  HOW ADORABLE IS THAT??  (Oh, and she comes in a close second to Shannen Doherty for best bangs.)

My girl crush on Zooey and her style and her humor is the inspiration for this post.

The New Girl is the IT girl!

So there you have it…my timeline of girl crushes throughout my life.

*LAME NOTE/AKA SIX DEGREES: in 1992 Drew Barrymore starred in the short-lived 2000 Malibu Road produced by Aaron Spelling.  Aaron Spelling also produced Beverly Hills, 90210 starring Jennie Garth, Shannen Doherty and Lindsay Price.  Lindsay Price starred in Eastwick.  Luke Perry starred with Kristy Swanson in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  Shannen Doherty starred in Charmed with Alyssa Milano (also produced by Aaron Spelling).  Alyssa Milano starred with Scott Bloom in Who’s the Boss? and with Scott’s brother Brian Bloom in Dance ’til Dawn and Crash Course (and they also dated). Brian Bloom also starred in 2000 Malibu Road (with Drew Barrymore) and Desperate for Love with Christian Slater (along with Veronica Cartwright who starred with Lindsay Price in Eastwick).  Christian Slater also starred Heathers with Shannend Doherty and in Kuffs with Milla Jovovich .  Milla starred in Dazed & Confused with Cole Hauser who starred in White Swan with Christian Slater.  Alicia Silverstone and Alyssa Milano were both offered parts on 90210 but turned them down.  Alyssa, however, moved to Melrose Place which is produced by Aaron Spelling.

(This goes on and on and on….I’m just getting warmed up.  But, you get the idea.  I’m a beacon for useless information…especially when it comes to celebrities.)

Christmas Magic

**NOTE: I wrote this last night but wasn’t able to post it to WordPress….here it is.

When I was in Jr. High there was a Christmas movie on tv called A Mom for Christmas.

A Mom for Christmas (Disney)

A Mom for Christmas (Disney)

It starred Olivia Newton-John as a mannequin who comes to life after a little girl wishes for a mom
for Christmas. It was a cute little Christmas special. Something a little different than the regular

Several years ago another cute movie popped up, Secret Santa with my girl, Jennie Garth.
Secret Santa (2003)

Secret Santa (2003)

Jennie (I can call her Jennie because I feel like we should be friends) played a reporter who gets
stuck in a small town and writing about the annual Secret Santa mystery....a do-gooder whose
generosity knows no price. I loved this movie. I wish it would air again. And it's because of that
movie that the last few years I thought I'd set out to watch new specials and see if any of them
would become staples or classics.

Last year, I liked Moonlight and Mistletoe with Candace Cameron Bure.
From Full House to Moonlight & Mistletoe...

And the year before I started to watch A Very Merry Daughter of the Bride.
That JoAnna Garcia is so damn adorable!

I didn't get to see it all the way thru so I was excited to watch it completely last year. It's a cute
movie AND it has Luke Perry and Jason Priestley (in a cameo). Two of my other buddies from
90210 (do we see a theme here?).

Tonight I'm watching Christmas Magic (not to be confused with my ALL TIME favorite
Christmas film, One Magic Christmas) with Lindy Booth and it's semi adorable.
A sugary sweet Christmas movie...

A sugary sweet Christmas movie…

None of these movies are spectacular but they’re fun to watch.  Sometimes it’s nice to curl up on the couch with a warm fuzzy blanket and just enjoy a little bit of holiday fluff.  And because I believe that, I’ve been checking my local listings to see what other Christmas film indulgences I can find.  Does anyone have any favorites or suggestions?

Oh Halloween

When I was little, Halloween was always so much fun.  I loved getting dressed up…as anything I wanted.  No judgement.  I loved going trick-or-treating with my older brother.  We didn’t live in a “tons-of-houses-close-by” kind of neighborhood so after we hit the local homes we’d hop in the car with my mom and she’d drive us to the next batch of houses, while my dad stayed home to hand out treats.  We always had a blast (except for this one time when I fell out of the car at my grandparents’ home….that sucked).

But the rest of the time we had pure, innocent fun!  That’s so not the case when you get older.  Once you grow up and make the decision to go out for Halloween, either to the bar or to a house party or to a dance, things are completely different….and far from innocent.

Halloween is the one night (yeahhh right!) of the year when young ladies (I use that term loosely {PUN INTENDED}) try to out-slut themselves/each other.  It’s shameful but some women feel as if it’s almost a rite-of-passage.  I think about the self-esteem of these girls….and that’s coming from me: the low self-esteem Queen.

And since I’m on the subject, whatever happened to being creative and making your Halloween costume?  Back in my day half the fun of Halloween was coming up with your costume idea and being creative with it.  Not of this going-to-Spirit-Halloween-and-paying-seventy-bucks for a pre-made costume.  No.  Instead, we would have spent tons of time at second-hand shops agonizing over the in-the-bins, digging for the perfect piece to complete the ensemble.  And we came up with some pretty neat ideas (my brother’s best idea was a car accident victim, complete with blood and a crutch – he was in 6th grade!!**).

Over the years I’ve been the following:

My mom dressed my brother and me up as members of KISS when we were teeny-tiny – we had little black wigs and everything.

Princess Di (because I loved her and I was 6).

Old staples: A Vampire / A Witch / Bride of Frankenstein

as the Bride of Frankenstein

A HORRIFIC me as Bride of Frankenstein and my brother as Dracula. Seriously. FRIGHTENING..and not because of the costume.

Michael Jackson (circa his Thriller era….because I loved him)  **(my brother’s cool costume idea below)

as Michael Jackson and my brother as an accident victim (and yes, the photo is in a frame – Thanks Mom!!)

A Mermaid (made my costume and was told I had the best one of the night!)  (I was too fat in these photos and refuse to post any of them. Yikes.)

A Roaring 20’s Flapper Dancer

as a flapper…NOT Pocahontas, Dad!!

Don’tcha wish you could wear makeup like this all the time? So colorful.

In my older days when Halloween was done in pairs or groups:

An ex and I went as Regan and the Priest from The Exorcist (I wore my costume backward I looked like she did when her head spun around)

In high school two of my friends and I decided last minute to hit the senior class party.  We ditched afternoon classes, made our costumes and won first place for going as a Toothbrush, Toothpaste and Dental Floss

Kim as Toothpaste, me as a Toothbrush and April as Dental Floss (okay, this technically isn’t us but I couldn’t find any photos)

A few of us went as Charlie’s Angels

A few years ago a group of us went as Disney Princesses (I was Cinderella…duh)

Me as Cinderella, my friend Paula as a clothes hamper (original AND homemade), Jesse as Sleeping Beauty and Ames as Pocahontas

A group of coworkers and I rocked the KISS look again

Paula as Ace Frehley, Jesse as Paul Stanley, Tasha as Peter Criss , Me as Gene Simmons

The Yahtzee girls and I went as our tag names – so I was a Social Butterfly

V as Taken, H.Bo as Ice Princess, Ames as Applehoe, Me as Social Butterfly and Anic as Stun Bunny

All of these costumes were made or put together at home.  I’ve never purchased a costume and only ever rented once.   A few years ago I went as a peasant girl .  In all honesty, I really just wanted to wear that dress.

Me as a Peasant and two hoodrats I don’t speak to. 🙂

This year I really wanted to go as Bonnie & Clyde (circa Brenda & Dylan, 1991*)

Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry as Brenda and Dylan as Bonnie and Clyde

but Blair SUCKKKKS.  We missed all the parties we were invited to this weekend (again, b/c Blair sucks**!) but Halloween is Wednesday and I still have the option of dressing up after work.  We’ll see.  Time will be limited but I may come up with something groovy.

**Just a note that Blair said yesterday that I was already wearing my costume:  A Beauty Queen.  Lame, I know but it earned him a point.

Yes yes…I am all class. He’s a lucky man.

The more I think of it and the more I sit here and stew, the more determined I am to dress up this year.  Stay tuned.  Hopefully I will have something to report.

A Little List

The last week has been so busy (as will be the week to come) and I’m finally getting a night to myself (which, by the way has already been sidetracked by shopping, groceries and several phone calls and quickie visitors {my S-I-L and super awesome nephews who are always welcome!}).  But I’ve since gone for a walk, cleaned and mopped by bathroom, had an insanely hot shower and now I get to veg out and do what I want…which is a) blog and b) not sure…watch a little boob-tube or read.  We’ll see.  Right now, here’s a little something:

Excited for:

1) Christmas (I know, I know).  It’s two months from today.

2) Kelly & Dylan (Jennie Garth & Luke Perry) working together to develop a sitcom (I’m a 90210 Freak!).

Tell me these two don’t have chemistry….

3) Drew Barrymore is a mommy (Welcome baby girl, Olive).

Okay, that’s NOT Olive in her arms, but puppy is still a cute baby, yes?

4) Christmas specials

I LOVE Christmas classics!

…..and Christmas baking

Half the fun is cleaning up the mess!

….and Christmas parties (see #1).

Well shoot….they sure do look like a fun crowd! 🙂

5) Wine Night. 🙂

6) Vision improvement (*more to come).

7) Les Mis (the movie).

My favorite play is now going to be my favorite movie….again*.

8) Elf (the play) {My super-cool mom got me tickets to see Elf the Musical for my Birthday!!!

The best way to spread Christmas cheer is by singing loud for all to hear.

9) Law enforcement cracking down and bullies are now being charged.  Good.  Enough kids have died.  (RIP Amanda Todd and others.)

*The 1998 version of Les Mis with Claire Danes (who I love!) and Liam Neeson sucked and I was thoroughly dissapointed as it did not follow with the musical…which I believe is one of the most beautiful things in the world.  I saw the play when I was in 10th grade and my BFF Steph I were/are obsessed with it.  I know all the words to every song and still weep when I hear them sung.  It’s a beautiful piece of art and 1998 trashed it.  Boo.
