The Best Shows on TV Now (that You’re Not Watching) – Part 1

If you haven’t yet checked out American Housewife (Tuesdays, ABC/CTV), then you’re missing out on some fun.

The adorable Katy Mixon stars as Katie Otto, wife and mother of three, raising her flawed family in a wealthy town filled with perfect wives and their perfect offspring.

It’s quirky and funny and Katy Mixon owns it each time.  She is unapologetic and lights up the screen.

Dear Katy Mixon:  we should be friends!

Julia Butters, who plays the youngest of the Otto children, Anna-Kat, steals the limelight each time she’s on screen.  Anna-Kat has OCD and anxiety issues and she is the apple of her mama’s eye.  She offers some sweet sincerity to the show.

I want to hug this kid.

American Housewife is a fun show and hasn’t been getting the any recognition it deserves.  So, if you haven’t watched it yet, you should.

Favorite TV Moments of the Week

I am lame. And because I am lame I am posting my two favorite TV moments of this past week.

#1 – Monday night I was at Amy Whoreface’s to watch the series finale of 90210 (because I felt I owed it to the original series to watch the redux). While Ames and I were chillin’ on the couch, gossiping, waiting for the show to start we had the TV running in the background. The latest Old Navy ad came on…the one with Boyz II Men. Amy said “That little girl creeps me out.” I hadn’t really paid much attention to the commercial before but when it ran again during the next round of ads I watched.

(The little girl comes on at 15 seconds in)

I laughed my ass off. That little girl reminds me of all the creepy little girls in Japanese horror films (The Ring {Ringu}, The Grudge, etc. And now, everytime that ad pops onto the screen I’m in stitches. Creepy. But funny.

#2 – I love me some New Girl. I think the show is quirky and offbeat and hysterical..and Zooey Deschanel is the shizz. So, the other night I was watching the season finale with CeCe’s wedding. During her traditional Indian ceremony, as she’s walking down the aisle to traditional Indian music, the antics ensued: The Indian music abruptly stops and “Cotton Eyed Joe” starts playing. Spontaneously. Loudly.** (I tried to insert a video of the scene but my video program apparently is not compatible with WordPress and I’m not technologically advanced enough to figure it out. Sorry, y’all.) The moment was instantly hilarious. The look on Zooey’s And Schmidt’s) face has had me rewinding and replaying numerous times. And what follows is Nick’s relentless fist pumping to CEJ because “It’s so catchy!” Very Effing Funny.

Reviving Eastwick

After talking about it during Halloween, I decided recently that I wanted to watch the series Eastwick again.  Unfortunately Sadly, Eastwick was cancelled in its first season so there were only 13 episodes to watch; which I’ve done over the last few weeks.

I keep talking about this show because it was so good!  I’ll never understand why shows like this aren’t given a chance.  It had a crazy following, was nominated for a People’s Choice Award, headlined an incredible cast (not to mention the great guest stars: Cybill Shepherd, Rosanna Arquette, Jerry O’Connell, Joanna Kerns), and had a great story-line.  It was a great show: Fun, exciting, sexy, silly.  And completely perfect for watching with your girlfriends and drinking wine.

Eastwick starred Rebecca Romijn (Roxy), my girl Lindsay Price (Joanna), Jamie Ray Newman (Kat) (who’s also guested on Grimm) as three women who come together accidentally and create a beautiful friendship.  And, unknown to them, they are witches, each with a specific and special power.

In from the dust comes a mysterious man to town, Darryl Van Horne (played  by Canadian Paul Gross).  He’s intriguing, he’s exciting, he’s sexy, he’s….trouble.

I'm Darryl Van Horne...these are my nipples. I'm probably the devil.

Also starring are several other great actors: Veronica Cartwright as Bunn – who knows Darryl from another time but refuses to give up what she knows;  The gorgeous Sara Rue who plays Joanna’s sidekick and BFF, Penny.  These two girls have such a great friendship, one that’s true-t0-life and reminds me oh-so-much of my friendship with my BFF, Steph (shout out!); Darren Criss, who now plays the magnifique Blaine on Glee.  And these are just a few of the people who make up a great cast for a great show.  “Great.” Should I be saying “Great”?  Because I feel like I should be using a better, more exciting word to describe Eastwick.

What a great looking cast!! We should be friends.

I wish that Eastwick hadn’t been cancelled.  I wish that I had the opportunity, still, to sit down with a glass of wine and watch it and laugh and get caught up in the drama and silliness and the magic of this show.  I loved it.

Thank goodness for the ability to watch tv online because Eastwick hasn’t been released on DVD yet.  But if it ever does, I will surely add it to my collection.
